DSA - I could not disagree with you more. Not only can consumers settle their debt on their own given some foundational information and up to the moment trends with their specific creditors, but they often do as good or better than a pro depending on the creditor.

I have been working with consumers who settle their own debt for many years and will put their numbers up against yours any day.

An expert comes in handy only when things get sticky or when dealing with a consumer who just plain does not want to do the work and is not opposed to paying someone for results - after the results are delivered.

Negotiating debt is a complicated process and one has to be skillful in making negotiations. Thus, everyone cannot carry out the negotiations and it is better to rely on an expert, who has carried out such a kind of negotiations in the past.
